ISO, 2016

Film work

Shot in 2016 in the suburban streets of Perth, Western Australia, and Mountainside, New Jersey, USA, ISO is a series of ongoing exploratory film works created at night using the experimentally high ISO settings found in contemporary digital cinema cameras at the time. In the darkness, the digital sensor’s efforts to make sense of what is not perceivable result in speckles of colour, grain, and ghosts of what may or may not be there. Allowing the camera to interpret the shadows of unknown spaces references notions of surveillance, security, fear, and isolationism often associated with the suburbs.

An iteration of ISO was first shown in UNSEEN at IG Bildende Kunst, Vienna, Austria, in October 2025, curated by David Komary.
